About
About Professor Majid
Professor and Chair of Cerebrovascular Neurology, University of Sheffield — translating cutting-edge neuroscience into effective therapies for stroke and cerebrovascular disease.

Professor Arshad Majid is Professor and Chair of Cerebrovascular Neurology in the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield, an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Royal Hallamshire Hospital), and Director of the Comprehensive Cerebrovascular Research Unit. In 2025 he was appointed an NIHR Senior Investigator.
His career bridges bench science and bedside care — from medical graduation at the University of Glasgow and neurology training at the University of Pennsylvania, to founding the Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases at Michigan State University and the William & Claire Dart Stroke Center at Sparrow Health System, before joining Sheffield in 2013.
“My professional mission is to translate cutting-edge neuroscience into effective therapies for patients with cerebrovascular and other neurological diseases.” — Professor Arshad Majid
About
Professor Majid is an international clinician-scientist and translational stroke leader developing disease-modifying therapies for cerebrovascular disease and brain repair. He leads large-scale translational programmes spanning mechanistic discovery, platform development, and adaptive clinical trials, integrating neuroprotection, neuromodulation, and precision therapeutic strategies for stroke recovery and cerebral small vessel disease.
He has built nationally recognised stroke systems: at Michigan State University he established one of the first certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers in the US and founded an ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology Fellowship; in the UK he served as Clinical Lead for the Stroke Research Network (Yorkshire and Humber), coordinating multicentre research across 12 institutions, and contributed to international consensus through the Stroke Treatment Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR).
He is Chief Investigator of a Phase 3 adaptive trial of vagus nerve stimulation for post-stroke motor recovery (NIHR EME), and his early discoveries on lymphocyte cell kinase (Lck) in ischaemic preconditioning helped shape the field of stroke neuroprotection.
